![]() I didn't think much about my mom walking out Busch road everyday, doing "fun runs" with dad on the weekends while growing up, maybe that was because I was involved with extra curricular activities every day after school. Football, baseball, and basketball practices/games depending on the season, maybe since I saw them participating in sport I knew it was something that was a part of our life. Maybe I looked up to them on how to live my life, followed their energy level throughout childhood in order to make them proud. Or perhaps we just had less to work with as kids growing up using our energy and creativity to create fun activities with friends. Didn't have the worries about safely playing outside and video games were not at our fingertips. All that said, they all play a part in my active childhood but none more than my parents taking the lead, actively showing us that exercise is a part of our lives. This Sunday marks The Bloomsday Run in Spokane Washington by far the most attended "fun run" by the Bates, ever! Myself, around 13 times, Brother Chris at least that many and mom and dad blowing us both out of the water with dad finishing the first 30 races and mom running all but one. This year will be the 41st running of Bloomsday, all but one mom!? Fast forward to today adding technology and safety concerns...The challenge to raise active kids gets increasingly harder with screen time at an all time high and the dangers in allowing your own kids to play in certain neighborhoods makes raising an active child harder than ever. A small reminder of how remaining active as an adult (parent) will rub off on the little ones watching. a few years ago a client of mine never considered herself an athlete, started working out, setting and achieving goals. Now she is an Iron Man (Woman) finisher, her 8 year old daughter asked if she could be signed up for a beginner Triathlon class and mentions that "I think I can do a race but not sure about the swim, so could you sign me up?" This is not a coincidence. The challenges will continue to get harder with video games and taking safety measures but knowing that you could influence your child's activities by participating yourself sounds pretty cool to me.
